Fun with friends on a gloomy day

From my photo journal...

It’s a gloomy day, but not for these three, aged 3 - 6. They so enjoyed playing together in the sea, energised by each other’s company, more daring in their silliness and squealing with delight.

Without them it might make a good ‘mood’ shot. I love the view here.

When I feel a bit tossed about in life, I tend to head to the coast and look out to sea. Maybe it’s a subconscious desire to regain control of the boat. And maybe I should just roll up my trousers and jump about in the shallow surf with friends.

A quieter spot

A gorgeous day that brought out the crowds to the beach. The stillness of this scene belies the activity of our day bathing, building sandcastles, queuing for ice-cream and crabbing off the harbour wall.  The slight ripple is nice. I like how it catches the light and paints the wiggly reflection of the mast.  And the clouds add interest to a beautiful sky. Everything looks good and serene and tranquil.  I preferred it here, away from the hustle and bustle of the seafront and arcades. Light and underlighting

It was a stunning morning with a lovely warmth from the rising sun as it illuminated the leaves. I loved the light hitting the underside of those high branches.  A morning like this takes some beating.  I carried on for another hour or so following various tracks through the forest, deciding on a whim which route to take at each junction. A rare occasion to feel so relaxed and free to explore.  Wonderful.  ---  Here again slightly cropped: ---  Here are the same two shots in black and white. Standing at ease in the flat light

Something about this tree stopped me scrolling as I reviewed my photos. Perhaps the flat light allows it to take centre stage. I love the elegant swoop of its lead stem.  Sunlight and shadows would add drama here. But this image has a calming effect on me. It’s not exciting but it is restful.
