Waiting for the day to come

Mist covers the heathland and a lone tree catches the first light of the sun at Bolton's Bench, Lyndhurst, in the New Forest.

All is still and the fog looks settled. The low wall of cloud in the background shows the slightest hint of warmth with faint pink and orange tints. Above it, everything clears into a beautiful, pale, bottomless blue.

And there, easy to miss, a golden line travels up the base of the tree trunk. A highlight. A sign. The sun is rising. Day is breaking.

I take in the calm. Breathe in the dewy air. And wait.
