Bringing out shapes, shades and colours

From my photo journal...

I wonder if there’s too much going on in this shot. What pulls your eye the most? I like the light on the foreground and in the central area.

But the path lit up on the right edge of the frame, does it distract? Does it make the shot too busy? Does it pull you away? Maybe. I could crop it out.

Even so, I just love the way the early morning sun brings out trees in this scene – the many shades and colours, the attractive shapes – and adds splashes of decoration along the ground.

A quieter spot

A gorgeous day that brought out the crowds to the beach. The stillness of this scene belies the activity of our day bathing, building sandcastles, queuing for ice-cream and crabbing off the harbour wall.  The slight ripple is nice. I like how it catches the light and paints the wiggly reflection of the mast.  And the clouds add interest to a beautiful sky. Everything looks good and serene and tranquil.  I preferred it here, away from the hustle and bustle of the seafront and arcades. Light and underlighting

It was a stunning morning with a lovely warmth from the rising sun as it illuminated the leaves. I loved the light hitting the underside of those high branches.  A morning like this takes some beating.  I carried on for another hour or so following various tracks through the forest, deciding on a whim which route to take at each junction. A rare occasion to feel so relaxed and free to explore.  Wonderful.  ---  Here again slightly cropped: ---  Here are the same two shots in black and white. Standing at ease in the flat light

Something about this tree stopped me scrolling as I reviewed my photos. Perhaps the flat light allows it to take centre stage. I love the elegant swoop of its lead stem.  Sunlight and shadows would add drama here. But this image has a calming effect on me. It’s not exciting but it is restful.
