Autumn silhouette

I could have spent all day in the forest today – stunning weather, gorgeous colours, wonderful atmosphere.

As I approached this scene I was drawn in the lovely silhouetted treelines against the vibrant background.

Shame about the bush in the bottom right corner. Could have done without that! But anyway, the rest is good.

Hmm, on first impressions with this one it seems to be a bit less clear what’s going on with the weather. It’s a bit dark and brooding, with no colour to draw the eye and warm you up. 

But the light on the leaves in the background draws the eye and brings a nice contrast to the silhouetted tree. And you notice that the sky is clear – and what appears to be a faint shaft of light on the ground – so it suggests the sun is out. 

I guess all of that provides a certain curiosity factor. And then there are the lovely lines of the tree, and background details and debris on the ground that add interest. 

So overall I think I like its effect on me. I find it quite restful, which is how I feel about a lot of black and white shots. Perhaps I find colour a bit overwhelming sometimes.

Seeing beyond the lines

What I think I like about these types of shots is the sense of balance. The lines of branches are always fascinating. And the way they extend to the edges looks like they’re attached to fixed points on the frame, conveying a sense of strength and stability like an intricate spider’s web.  Then again, they also resemble lightning-like filaments in a plasma globe, conveying a sense of energy and reactivity.  Either way, it’s the branches that I notice first. And I can’t say they’re particularly attractive!  But the leaves are glorious in the sunshine. Together with the blue sky, they create depth through their various shades.  Standing beneath this vibrant canopy was a wonder to behold. It was this I wanted to capture.  —  Here again in black and white: In contrast to the colour version, this initially feels a little darker in mood – and yet, not overly oppressive. Standing at ease in the flat light

Something about this tree stopped me scrolling as I reviewed my photos. Perhaps the flat light allows it to take centre stage. I love the elegant swoop of its lead stem.  Sunlight and shadows would add drama here. But this image has a calming effect on me. It’s not exciting but it is restful. A transformed space

Sometimes you’re just taken with the colours in a scene. Here, it was the lovely sunbathed floor contrasting beautifully with the baby blue sky and dappled leafage that caught my attention.  The shadows convey a depth to the forest – one that looks a bit dense and dark and not particularly inviting.
