Sizing things up

I was drawn to the light on the leaves here. It seems now though to be about the patchwork and patterns. 

I love looking up at the trees like this. I’m not sure what it is that appeals so much. Maybe it’s their tallness and my smallness. I guess it’s the same feeling you get around tall buildings – the sense of scale and greatness. Plus it’s just fun to capture different perspectives. 

This was a quick snap on a quick bike ride. Another glorious moment in a glorious autumn. How amazing to be here.

Again in black and white:

I’m more aware of the lines in this one. The dark trunks seem to play a more significant role. They lead me up into the shot and my eyes meet a fascinating collection of criss-crossing branches. Although they’re separate, they look connected. 

Some of those thinner lines combine with the leaves to resemble roads and fields and towns taken from a great height. 

I like the mosaic of contrasting leaves in the top left. The lighter central area provides a nice counterpoint to the darker edges – its airiness offering relief from their denseness. And then I register the brilliant light almost consuming some trees and foliage at the bottom of the frame. 

As often happens, the black and white rendering helps me see the detail and intricacy of life – the life behind the life. And it’s just a small piece of what’s happening all over the planet. And if I were to place just one of those leaves under a microscope I’d probably be filled with more wonder still.

What I think I like about these types of shots is the sense of balance. The lines of branches are always fascinating. And the way they extend to the edges looks like they’re attached to fixed points on the frame, conveying a sense of strength and stability like an intricate spider’s web.  Then again, they also resemble lightning-like filaments in a plasma globe, conveying a sense of energy and reactivity.  Either way, it’s the branches that I notice first. And I can’t say they’re particularly attractive!  But the leaves are glorious in the sunshine. Together with the blue sky, they create depth through their various shades.  Standing beneath this vibrant canopy was a wonder to behold. Standing at ease in the flat light

Something about this tree stopped me scrolling as I reviewed my photos. Perhaps the flat light allows it to take centre stage. I love the elegant swoop of its lead stem.  Sunlight and shadows would add drama here. But this image has a calming effect on me. It’s not exciting but it is restful. A transformed space

Sometimes you’re just taken with the colours in a scene. Here, it was the lovely sunbathed floor contrasting beautifully with the baby blue sky and dappled leafage that caught my attention.  The shadows convey a depth to the forest – one that looks a bit dense and dark and not particularly inviting.
