Striking gold

I just happened upon this fallen golden leaf whilst wandering around taking photos. Most of the time I was looking up at the beautiful canopy, so it seemed like a gift when I looked down and saw it gleaming before me.

It was a glorious November day, sandwiched between grey days of drizzle. I was glad to get out for half an hour to take a few snaps.

Interesting, though. I was on a work deadline so I wasn’t able to relax and feel as receptive to the moment as I wanted to be. That’s also why this shot felt like a gift. It’s as if it was saying, “Well done, you’ve made the effort so have this!”

Here it is again in black and white:

While my eye is first drawn to the bright leaf as in the colour shot, it seems to play a less significant role. It’s as if it were a signpost directing my eye upwards.

Here, I find the light shining in the gap between the trees at the top of the frame more interesting. The fact that it’s a bit out of focus also draws me in. I’m more conscious of the depth of field in this version.

Something inside me is saying, ‘Take me to the source’.
